Some questions come back again and again. A normal forum buries them inside long threads. A question-and-answer forum does the opposite. It puts one clear question at the top, sorts the answers by votes, and marks the one that actually worked.<\/p>\n
That format is what Stack Overflow made famous. You can build the same thing inside WordPress, on your own domain, in about an afternoon. You do not need a developer, and you do not need to write code.<\/p>\n
This guide walks through the whole job. Every plugin figure below was checked against the official WordPress.org plugin directory<\/a> on 2 September 2026.<\/p>\n A question-and-answer forum is a discussion board built around one question per page. The question sits at the top. Below it sit answers, and each answer can be voted up or down. The person who asked can mark one answer as the helpful one, which pins the solution in place for every future reader.<\/p>\n A classic forum works differently. It shows a thread in date order, so the correct fix might sit at reply number 43. Nobody scrolls that far. In a Q&A layout the best answer floats to the top on its own, because the community votes on it. Comments still exist, but they sit in a smaller panel under each answer instead of drowning it.<\/p>\n That single change is why Q&A boards work so well for support, courses, and technical products. Each page answers one thing, clearly.<\/p>\n The first reason is support cost. Every answered question is a page your team never has to write again. Point the next person at the thread and move on. Over a year, a busy board can absorb a large share of your repeat email tickets.<\/p>\n The second reason is search traffic. A Q&A page is a normal WordPress URL on your own domain. In wpForo, layouts are set on the top-level category, and every child forum inherits that layout. Child forums cannot use a different one, so plan your structure before you build it.<\/p>\n Open wpForo \u2192 Forums<\/strong>, edit your top category, and choose the Question and Answer layout. wpForo version 3 ships five layouts in total: Extended, Simplified, Question and Answer, Threaded, and Boxed. You should now see vote counts, answer counts, and reply counts beside every question.<\/p>\n Resist the urge to build fifteen boards. Three or four is plenty at the start. A board with two questions in it looks abandoned, and abandoned boards stop people posting.<\/p>\n Good starting categories are usually “Getting Started”, “Troubleshooting”, and “Feature Requests”. Name each one the way a user would say it out loud. Add a one-line description under each, because that description tells people what belongs where and cuts down on misfiled questions.<\/p>\n You can always split a busy board later. The usual setup lets guests read everything and requires a free account to post. That keeps your pages indexable while still holding people accountable for what they write.<\/p>\n Open wpForo \u2192 Usergroups<\/strong> to map your WordPress roles onto forum groups. The Q&A layout is free, and it is tested against WordPress 7.0.4.<\/p>\n wpDiscuz<\/strong> takes a different route. It replaces your comment system rather than adding a forum, and it can run threaded, vote-based discussion under posts. Version 7.6.67, 60,000+ installs, 94% from 578 reviews, updated 29 August 2026, PHP 7.4 minimum. Choose it if people should discuss your content, not raise their own topics.<\/p>\n CM Answers<\/strong> is a dedicated Q&A plugin. Version 3.4.2, roughly 300 active installs, 76% from 86 reviews, updated 29 June 2026. The small user base means fewer guides and slower community answers.<\/p>\n bbPress<\/strong> and Asgaros Forum<\/strong> are solid classic forums, not Q&A boards. bbPress sits at version 2.6.14 with 100,000+ installs, but its last release was 2 July 2025. Asgaros Forum is version 3.4.0 with the best rating in the category at 96%. Neither gives you voting or accepted answers without extra work. It is not available for download, and it has not returned. Any tutorial still recommending it is at least four years stale.<\/p>\n AnsPress was closed on 23 July 2026, pending a full review. The directory describes the closure as temporary, so it may come back. Until it does, you cannot install it from your dashboard and it will not receive automatic updates.<\/p>\n Both were popular choices for years, which is exactly why so many old articles still point at them. Check the plugin page on WordPress.org before you install anything you read about elsewhere.<\/p>\n A Q&A board only pays for itself if people can find it. Start with the basics. Make sure guests can read threads without an account, because content behind a login is content Google cannot see.<\/p>\n Next, look at your markup. Google treats question pages differently from FAQ pages. Its Q&A structured data documentation<\/a> explains that QAPage suits a page with one question where users can submit alternative answers, while FAQPage suits a list of questions the site answers itself. Forum pages are dynamic and usually skip full-page caching, so they load slower than your blog. An unanswered question list looks like a ghost town, and nobody wants to be the first to speak. Below that rate the board feels dead, and dead boards drive people back to email. The seed questions are the easy part, because your support inbox already contains them. Pull the twenty most repeated questions from the last six months, post them under your own account, and answer them properly. That gives new visitors something to read, gives Google something to index, and shows first-time posters what a good question looks like.
